The Darwin eco quartier in Bordeaux is a relatively new Bordeaux urban regeneration project and was launched in 2011. In 1874, the Niel Military barracks on the Quai des Queyries in the Bastide District on the right bank of the Garonne River were constructed to consolidate the different branches of the army that were scattered about Bordeaux. 

In 2005, the military ceased operating in the barracks, and the buildings were abandoned.
